老外說＂I’m not feeling too hot today.＂不是指今天不熱！

Sandy在茶水間遇到剛到台灣來的外籍同事，熱情地打了招呼。外籍同事說：

＂I’m not feeling too hot today.＂

外頭天氣那麼熱，你居然不覺得熱，天氣適應得不錯啊，
Sandy就說：“That’s great!”

老外臉色倉白，一臉疑惑，不知怎麼回答！

原來”Feel too hot.”不是指他「感覺不熱」，而是說他「身體不太舒服」。今天一起來看看hot這個字。

1. I’m not feeling too hot today.

（Ｘ）我覺得今天沒有太熱。
（Ｏ）我今天身體有些不適。

用「天氣」來比喻身體狀況，大家可能熟悉的是under the weather，指「身體不太舒服」。例如：
He has been under the weather for quite a few days. 他身體不太舒服已經有好幾天了。
Feeling too hot也是類似用法。朗文字典對”I don’t feel too hot.” 的解釋是：
I feel slightly ill. 我感覺有點不舒服。
Hot這個字本就有「好」的意思，所以not hot就是「不那麼好」。你可能會聽到美國高中生說：
I didn’t flunk, but my record isn’t so hot. 我考試是及格了，不過分數不太高。
I’m not feeling too hot.是一個很口語的表達，其中too hot也可以用very hot/so hot，意思就是「身體微恙，不那麼舒服」：
I'm not feeling too hot.
I'm not feeling very hot.

2. The new CEO is in the hot seat.

（Ｏ）新來的執行長面臨著重大而艱難的局面。

“Hot seat” 的原義是 死刑犯坐的「電椅」。“In the hot seat”字面是「坐在電椅上」，用來比喻「身負重任、處境艱難」，需要解決非常困難且重大的問題。“Be in the hot seat”，常用來指那些身處政治風暴、醜聞纏身，要處理棘手問題的人。。
例句：
If you’re in the hot seat, he’ll fight for you. 假如你有困難，他會挺力相助的。

3. He likes making it hot for people.

（Ｘ）他喜歡讓每個人都覺得很熱。
（Ｏ）他喜歡刁難人。

＂Make it hot for someone＂是指「找人麻煩、刁難人、讓人日子不好過」。hot在這裡是指「很棘手的」，多看幾例，熟悉用法：
Maybe if we make it hot for them, they'll leave. 也許我們刁難他們一下，他們就會知難而退了。
The cops were making it hot for him, so he blew town. 那些警察老在找他碴兒，弄得他日子不好過，所以他匆匆離開了。
