Research conducted at Oxford, Harvard and other universities has shown that the most effective and rewarding way of learning is analogous of trying to b) apprehend, or perceive the reality within the context of a subject.  Imagine a field of study as a room, a house, a building, or an entire universe to be discovered.  The learner thus becomes the explorer, and knowledge is to be researched, practiced, appreciated, and then utilized vertical and laterally, and of course, applied functionally.

In pedagogical language, the method is called “metacognitive awareness and control,” and it means to take the brainy action of thinking to a higher level, thus to be able to observe, comprehend, and guide your own process of cognition.  An example of the method is accomplished simply by advising the students to reflect on their writing or thoughts on their own, and not make the corrections for them. 

 

以用教學術語來說,這個方法叫“超越思想與意識控制,” 意思是把大腦運作帶往更高層次的發展,它能夠觀察,理解,引導自我的認知。其中一個例子是,建議學生反思自己的寫作與思考,而不需要糾正他們。

 

As the students adapt and control the directions of their big ideas, they will be able to formulate c) tangible forms of intellect that will become the building blocks of their own territories of knowledge.  Tosum things up, the ability to reason is necessary in terms of logic and argument, and memorizing facts will get people through exams, but the information often becomes useless in real life.  On the other hand, acquiring a sense of mastery and autonomy of how one’s own mind operates opens up the channels to new innovations and creations. 

 

當學生適應而且懂得控制思維方向後,就會發展出一種智能,此智能可以把知識領域如磚塊般堆砌上來。簡單來說,推理能力對於邏輯和思辯是必要的,背誦讓人們通過考試,但死記的知識最終在現實生活中毫無用處。另一方面,掌握與自主如何運作自己內心的訣竅後,會開啓新的創新和創造力。

 

Einstein said: “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”  In writing to a friend, he also said that: "People like you and I… do not grow old no matter how long we live...[We] never cease to stand like curious children before the great mystery into which we were born."  And perhaps, as long as we strive to keep on learning like children, we will never grow old.

Wears the pants 表示是誰當家,做主的意思。傳統上講就是穿褲子的那一位。On her first day as the new boss, she wore a beautiful feminine outfit, but her attitude and competency showed everyone that she certainly wore the pants around the office.  

她第一天做新老板,穿了一套美麗的套穿,可是她的態度與能力表現出她獨當一面的能力。
