97%的人講錯的句子：你們會和哪一隊比賽？

大部份台灣人覺得英文最難的部份是介系詞。而眾多介系詞當中，最難或者說，最讓人在脫口而出時「沒想到」的是against。有一個實際發生的例子，我們在網路有一個造句實驗，請會員把看到中文句子，講成英文。其中有一句話有四百多位會員做答，但不到10位答對，錯誤率高達97%，是哪一句呢？

"你們會和哪一隊比賽？"

錯誤的答案很多，其中最多的是
“Which team are you going to play with?”（Ｘ）
"Play with”是和某人玩，這麼講，會變成是，明天你們會和哪一隊玩？

這裡只要把"Play with”改成”play against”，意思是和某人對打，意思就到位了。
“Which team are you going to play against?”（O）

但against經常讓人想不到。這種例子還很多，例如，叫人「靠著牆站」，你可能會說：
Stand by the wall. （不明確）
Stand beside the wall. （不明確）

這兩句指的是在在牆的旁邊，並沒有說靠牆。Against有對著、對抗的意思：
Stand against the wall. （O）
It is difficult to see anything against this bright light. 對著這種強光很難看到任何東西。　　

再看幾個例句：
我們餐廳有一條禁煙規定。
Our restaurant has a regulation of no smoking. （X）
No smoking是一個形容詞，像no smoking area/ no smoking policy，它不可放在of之後，這時有against就很好用
Our restaurant has a regulation against smoking. （O）

Against有對照、相對於的意思，例如：
請對照貨單檢查了箱子裡裝的東西。
Please check the contents of the box and see if they match the bill.
更精簡一點，用against
Please check the contents of the box against the bill.

會對人產生不利，也可以用against：
Lack of experience will generally count against you in an interview.
一般而言，缺乏工作經驗會成為面試的不利因素。
