"Someone says" goes at the beginning

英文裡,「某人說」(或「問」、「叫」、「想」等)放句首、句中、句尾都可以,中文裡則是盡量放句首

"Somebody says" (or "asks", "cries", "thinks" etc.) type phrases can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of an English sentence; in Chinese it’s best to put these phrases at the beginning of the sentence.

【英文例句】
a. 前:The crow thought to himself, "I can knock the jar over, and then I’ll have water to drink."
b. 中:"I can knock the jar over," the crow thought to himself, "and then I’ll have water to drink."
c. 後:"I can knock the jar over, and then I’ll have water to drink," the crow thought to himself.

【中文翻譯】
a.-c. 前:烏鴉想:「如果把水瓶撞倒,我就可以喝到水了。」

下面用同一組例句來說明英翻中兩個不同的大原則。

(2) 重點放句末
The main point goes at the end

英文句子裡最重要、最有震撼力的部分可以出現在句首、句中、句尾,都不一定;可是中文裡,重點一般總是放句末的。這是因為英語常常用語調來標出哪個部分最重要,中文卻依賴語序來標示出重點。所以一讀完英文原句後,你可以馬上找出重點在哪裡,直接放到中文翻譯句的句尾

相反的,不是重點的背景資訊,如時間、地點、方式等,先挪到句子開頭的部分。

The most important, or most surprising point of an English sentence can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence, while in Chinese it normally appears at the end of the sentence or phrase. This is because English often uses intonation to mark what is most important, while Chinese depends heavily on word order to mark what is most important. So immediately after reading the original English, pick out the main point of the sentence or phrase, and put it at the end of your Chinese translation.

Conversely, pick out the background information, like time, place, and manner, and put it at the beginning of a Chinese sentence.

(3) 時序律
Follow the temporal sequence of events

一般來說,在敘述事情的經過時,中文通常會依照事情的前後順序呈現出來。這叫做「時
間順序原則」或「時序律」。英文也常常這麼做,可是彈性比較大

Chinese generally follows chronological order when describing events; this is called the "Principle of Temporal Sequence." English often does the same; however, there is generally greater flexibility on this point in English than in Chinese.

(2) 和 (3) 的【英文例句】
a. 前:He began dropping pebbles into the water inside, one by one, carrying them to the jar with his beak.

b. 中:One by one, he began dropping pebbles into the water inside, carrying them to the jar with his beak

c. 後:He began carrying pebbles to the jar with his beak, one by one, and dropped them into the water inside.

(2) 和 (3) 的【中文翻譯】
a.-c. 他叼來許多石子,把它們一塊一塊地投到水瓶裡

(4) 形容詞子句可以另起一句
Put long modifying clauses into a separate phrase

英文裡,修飾名詞,有以下兩種方式:

  1. 一般形容詞通常放在名詞前,例如:the delicious, sweet water = 可口甘美的
  2. 意思稍微複雜一點的修飾語,可以放在名詞後形容詞子句裡,例如,That’s a problem that previously didn’t exist.,或 Yesterday I ran into a good friend who was my classmate in the math department at Yale 20 years ago and also my roommate for a year.

That’s a problem that previously didn’t exist. 可以翻成:那是個之前不存在的問題。
  2. 起新句,就是把修飾語內容寫到名詞後的一兩個短句裡去。

形容詞子句一長,把意思內容全部塞在名詞前,句子就變得越來越不容易懂,也不太像中文,例如,

【英文例句】
Yesterday I ran into a good friend who was my classmate in the math department at Yale 20 years ago and also my roommate for a year.

【中文翻譯】
這句固然可以翻成:

我昨天遇到了一位二十年前跟我一起在耶魯讀數學系並且也做過一年室友的好朋友。

可是真的有點長,不如翻成:

我昨天遇到了一位好朋友,他是我20年前在耶魯數學系的同學我們也做過一年室友

(5) 「發呆」翻譯法大公開
The zone-out translation method

That’s it. Lather, rinse, repeat! (下句再循序進行一次以上五個步驟!)

下期預告:前五種英翻中的技巧講完了,剩下五種下期再講,敬請期待!
