這個觀念怎麼說?

英文的 “How are you” 問候其實就跟中文的「吃飽沒」一樣，重點不在「答案」，而是表達關心。 

甲飽沒？
中文概念：吃飯了嗎？
英文概念：How’s it going? / What’s up? / You all right?

Clerk: Good morning. How’s it going?
過多資訊 I’m fine. I just got a call from my friend. She had a car accident last night, and I’m really worried about her…
Clerk: Ah… right… sorry to hear that… What can I get you today?

Clerk: Good morning. How’s it going?
理想回答 I’m doing great. you?
Clerk: I’m doing all right. What can I get you today?

東西方人關心的方式不同，我們問候別人吃飽了沒，就像是老外在問候How’s it going一樣，只要回答Pretty good! 就可以了，太私人的事情，跟親密的朋友家人分享就可以了。

有人來家裡作客，招呼客人
中文概念：多吃點。
英文概念：Help yourself.

不禮貌：Eat more.
理想說法：Help yourself.

中文經常問人吃飽沒、多吃一點，這些雖然是好意，直譯成英文，聽起來就是不自然。Eat more是祈使句，像命令人的口氣，招呼客人可以說help yourself(自己來，別客氣。)

給予負面評價
中文概念：這寫得不好，要改一下
英文概念：太直接：The report is not good. You can fix it.
太直接：There are a few problems with the report. Can you fix it?
理想回答：There are a few problems with the report, could you fix it?

外國人在表達上比我們更開放直接沒錯，但是在給予負面回饋時，就要特別小心了，反而這時候，太過直接只會尷尬，可以用would/could就不要用will/can。

「請喝咖啡」的言下之意，該怎麼說？
中文概念：我跟你「喝個咖啡」（開會、檢討）
英文概念：太模糊：We should go Starbucks.
理想回答：Let’s go get some coffee, I’m curious about your thoughts on the new project.
理想回答：Could we briefly meet tomorrow? There’s a small problem with one of your cases but it’s nothing to worry about.

漂亮話要這麼說
慢走 (X) Walk slowly.
Have a pleasant journey.
Please take it easy.
Get home safe.
Take care.
Take care on the road.
如果你直接跟老外說Walk slowly, please.他恐怕不知道你的關心是什麼意思，但你的意思其實是It’s raining outside. The road is slippery, please take care. 外面下雨了路滑，請小心走慢點。

不會、不客氣
You’re welcome.
Don’t mention it.
No big deal.

哪裡哪裡
You’re too kind.

麻煩你
Sorry to trouble you.
Excuse me, can I just…?

辛苦了
Thank you for your hard work!
You’ve worked so hard.
Thank you for your effort

慢慢吃
中文說慢慢吃，英文的概念是「祝大家有個好胃口」

含有多重概念的「歡迎」
我們歡迎你們明年再來。
(X) We welcome you to visit us next year.
英文裡面並沒有「歡迎某人做某事」的概念，只有在客人到達後才能用動詞welcome+地點。
Welcome to my home! 歡迎到我家。
Welcome Dr. Jackson to the stage. 歡迎Jackson博士到舞臺前。

中文說的「歡迎」，意指一種邀請和希望，因為動作還未發生，所以用hope代替。這句話可以改為：
We hope you can come to our city next year.
You are welcome to our city again next year.
Please feel free to visit us next time.

另一種「歡迎」表示「…廣為接受」、「感謝…」，可以用be appreciated.

加油“Add oil”收錄進了牛津英語詞典
“Add oil”加油，是個港式英語的用法，在2018年底，已經被《牛津英語詞典》(Oxford English Dictionary)收錄進去。中文說「加油」可以用在各種的場合，鼓勵別人、安慰別人，但在英文裡面，每個用法，都不能含糊用一個字代表。
