「當我有空」說When I am free，為何容易被老外誤會？

中文處理「如果」和「當」比較寬鬆，但英文卻很嚴謹。“When I am free”，老外和老中有不同的解讀。Amy的意思是
「當我有空，我就會處理。」（但我不一定有空）
老外的解讀是：
「你會有空，所以一定會處理。」（你一定有空）

Amy本來覺得自己很委屈，經解釋才發現原來是自己沒搞清楚，當我們用「when」的時候，老外認為這件事一定會發生。

when是必然發生(will happen)；if是可能發生(might happen)

1. I'll take care of it when I am free this afternoon.
這個下午有空，我就會處理。（一定有空）
I'll take care of it if I am free this afternoon.
這個下午要是有空，我就會處理。（可能有空，可能沒空）

2. When I am in Taipei, I'll visit you.
我去台北的時候，會去拜訪你。（一定會去台北）
If I am in Taipei, I'll visit you.
我去台北的話，會去拜訪你。（還不確定去不去）

3. 天氣放晴的話，我們就會去展覽會場
（X）We may go to the fair, when the weather is bright and sunny.
（O）We may go to the fair, if the weather is bright and sunny.
人不能主宰天氣，放晴與否不一定會發生，所以用if強調不一定。

4. 如果我老了，我會想和我的孩子一起生活
（X）If I am old, I'd love to live with my kids.
（O）When I am old, I'd love to live with my kids.
人會老是自然規律，如同花開花謝一樣必然發生。

比if更強烈的如果：in case（萬一）
先比較一下以下的中文：
如果沒收到錢…
萬一沒收到錢…
「萬一」比「如果」的口氣更加強烈，更多了一些擔心，希望它不要發生。
if口吻平和；in case (of) 口吻強烈

1. In case of rain, I can't go.
萬一下雨，我就不能去了。
If it rains, I can't go.
如果下雨，我就不能去了。

2. If there is a fire, leave the room.
如果發生火災，請離開房間。
In case of fire, leave the room.
萬一發生火災，請離開房間。

3. I need painkillers if I'm in severe pain.
如果我痛到不行，我會需要止痛藥。
I need painkillers in case I'm in severe pain.
萬一我痛到不行，我會需要止痛藥。
