How should I put it? 該怎麼說才好

在外商工作一段時間了，Daniel發現，老外講的英文和自己的表達不太一樣。怎麼不一樣法？他舉例，要表達「不知道怎麼說」，老中老外的說法就不一樣：

他自己會說：How should I say?
老外會說：How should I put it?

為什麼會有選字的不同呢？關鍵不在於不會說，主要是「怎麼說」，而不是不知道怎麼表達（express），不知道怎麼解釋（explain），把說、表達、解釋三種涵意加在一起，就是put。Put簡單說，就是把一件事講到別人能懂。

例如在開會時，我們常聽人說："What’s the best way to put this?"（要怎麼說比較好），這裡的put不只是「擺」，而是一種「訊息的安置」。我們今天來熟悉put這個字的同時，希望大家也開始留意每一個英文字都有從核心出發，往外延伸的多層意義。

• Put說、表達、解釋

How should I put it?
（X）要怎麼放這個東西？
（O）該怎麼說呢？

Now let me put it this way…
（X）讓我把這個放在這裡。
（O）我這樣解釋好了。

Why do you always have to put things so brutally?
（X）為什麼你總是很粗魯放東西？
（O）為什麼你總是講話這麼刻薄？

Just stay put, I’ll get the door.
（X）放著，我去應門。
（O）你待在這，我去應門。

• Put書寫+安置

The staff asked me to put down my name on the paper.（工作人員要我把我的名字寫在紙上。）
Put a period at the end of a sentence.（在句末加上句號。）

• Put讓／試著＋處於……（狀態）

把東西「放在」某處可以用put，那如果「人被放置」，意思就是人陷入了某種情況。
We tried to put the dog at ease. 我們試著安撫那隻狗。
This put us in a very difficult situation.（這事讓我們陷入窘境。）

• Put設定＋標價

Put a price/value/figure on sth.
They decided to put a price of eighty thousand dollars on the new product.（他們決定把新產品定價訂在8萬塊。）
You can’t put a value on trust.（信任沒有標價。）
