1 Directness 直接

(1) Get to the point quickly. A big (2) wind-up is unnecessary. Facts, research, and background information can wait until after you've stated your conclusions, not before.

2. Visual Language

To make your speech more vivid, your language has to be more visual. American political speeches are examples of visual imagery and colorful language. Take a look at how Russian President Vladimir Putin and Former U.S. President Barack Obama spoke in front of the U.N. General Assembly.

Putin said,"In 1945, the countries that defeated Nazism joined their efforts to lay solid foundations for the postwar world order."

Obama put it this way: "Out of the ashes of the Second World War, having witnessed the unthinkable power of the atomic age, the United States has worked with many nations in this Assembly to prevent a third world war."

"Obama's use of dramatic visual language is one of the (A) hallmarks of American political speech. But that approach is (B) permeating the business world, too. As video-conferencing, social media, and remote teams become more prevalent, visual language has become necessary to keep people engaged and inspired."

3. Simple Vocabulary

Simple diction and syntax keeps everyone on the same page and avoids misunderstandings. To say "I have to (3) touch base with the head of our department." is no better than "I have to let the head of our department know the situation." Since your coworkers might not be familiar with the phrase which is derived from American baseball culture.

4. (C) A Flat Pitch

When speaking, British, Indian, and Chinese people frequently change pitch vertically (from low to high or high to low), while the Americans stretch out vowels horizontally. "In American business speaking, changing pitch vertically is perceived as distracting, artificial, and not projecting confidence."

(1) get to the point 講重點

Let me get straight to the point. I don't think you'll pass this exam unless you work harder.

They announced that they would be winding up the negotiations today.

(3) touch base

The bank holds an annual meeting to touch base with its shareholders.
