Euthanasia for those with Depression

Read Aloud:

All societies deal with depression. It is a complex issue. Every society deals with it differently.

Holland and Belgium are two countries in the world that allow for assisted suicide for those dealing with depression.

In a case in Belgium, which is shown in a documentary by The Economist, a 24 year old woman, Emily, was approved by three doctors to be euthanized in accordance to their assessment that her condition could and would not improve and there was no other treatment that could be provided. However, Emily changed her mind and wanted to live. Therefore, she was wrongly assessed.

Aren’t doctors responsible for finding, to what we define as, a sensible solution for those dealing with depression? There was no focus on the root cause of the issue. Shouldn’t we be asking the right questions to clearly assess the issue to find the solution?

Life has its complexities. Doesn’t our level of resilience to adversity define who we are as human beings? Isn’t learning to increase our resilience, part of life? Shouldn’t the experts in such disciplines be more responsible to ensure that we are provided with the appropriate solutions to such difficulties?
