水龍頭漏水，在英文裡和water無關！一次看懂4組日常相似詞怎麼用

Jessica出差參展，回飯店房間不知道怎麼打開冷氣，打電話跟櫃台人員說“I don’t know how to open the air conditioner”，櫃台人員嚇了一跳。

“We can’t open the air conditioner. If we open it, everything will fall out.” 不行打開，一打開零件就掉出來了。

原來電器的開關應該要說turn on/ turn off，用open聽起來就像把機器拆解了一樣。

旅遊遇到房間設施故障時，必須用英文向房東或是飯店員工說明情況，但因為緊張不小心蹦出一些中式英文就造成誤會。
冷氣打不開。
(X) I couldn’t open the air conditioner.
(O) I couldn’t turn on the air conditioner.

打開（電器） 關閉 調大（例：火、音量） 調小 turn on turn off turn up turn down turn on不只用在打開電器，打開水龍頭、放洗澡水，也可以用：

Could you turn on the bath for me? 幫我放浴缸的水好嗎？
也常聽人說Could you run the bath for me?

1. 馬桶堵塞了

(X) The toilet is stuck.

(O) The toilet is clogged/blocked.

Stuck是「受困、無法擺脫」，多指人被困在某個空間動彈不得，例：We were stuck in the elevator for an hour.（我們受困在電梯裡1小時。） clog則是「堵塞」，介系詞加up或with接堵塞的原因，例：The pipe's clogged with dirt. （管子裡積滿污垢。）

2. 瓦斯爐點不了火

(X) The gas stove is not on fire.

(O) The gas stove is not igniting.

On fire是「著火、失火」，例：The hut was on fire.（小木屋著火了。） ignite才是「點燃，使燃燒」。

3. 燈泡燒壞了

(X) The light bulb exploded.

(O)The light bulb burned out.

Explode是爆炸。電器、插座燒壞應該要用burn out。

4. 水龍頭漏水了

(X) The faucet is watering.

(O) The faucet is leaking.

Water是水，也可以當作動詞用，意思是澆水、灑水，灌溉的意思，和漏水不同。 例如：The flowers need watering. 這些花需澆澆水。
