英文的「大器晚成」要怎麼說？

當我們碰到中文的「成語」或「俚語」，經常找不到英文中相對應的字。英文有沒有這類說法，背後涵義其實是：英文裡有沒有這個概念？

今天我們要來看late bloomer這個字：一朵晚開的花。

Bloomer是從bloom（開花）這個字來的。植物學上，指開花較晚的植物。

用在指生理發育的早熟或晚熟

先來看一段Wikipedia對late bloomer的解釋：

The term is used metaphorically to describe a child or adolescent who develops more slowly than others in their age group, but eventually catches up and in some cases overtakes their peers, or an adult whose talent or genius in a particular field only appears later in life than is normal - in some cases only in old age.

an early bloomer和a late bloomer有（生理上）早熟和晚熟的意思。

Being a late bloomer is totally normal and nothing to be ashamed of。（身體晚熟是正常的，沒有什麼好害羞的。）

用在指學習與成長的過程

Late bloomer甚至也衍伸到任何學習的領域。

例句：

While it’s true that we envy an early bloomer, it doesn’t mean that we don’t admire a late bloomer.（「英雄出少年」與「大器晚成」兩者一樣可貴。）

這句話裡的兩種人，一種叫early bloomer，早熟、早慧、早發，年紀輕輕就很有成就，像近來爆紅的Facebook創辦人馬克．佐克柏（Mark Zuckerberg），二十三歲就出頭，你可以說他是early bloomer。音樂神童莫札特，也是early bloomer。

大器晚成，語出《老子》。學英文確實也有late bloomer，到四十歲、五十歲才真的把英文學好的人所在多有。

I was a late bloomer. But anyone who blooms at all, ever, is very lucky.--Sharon Olds （我是一朵晚開的花。但花兒只要開過都幸運。--美國當代女詩人Sharon Olds）

晚熟又何妨？學英文真是十年磨一劍！要提醒的是，再晚，花總得開，磨了的劍，一定要出鞘。
