Debtors Exposed In China As Social Credit System Unfolds
00:12
In China, people who owe money and don’t pay will be publicly shamed. This is a system instituted in China called a “social credit” system, which will provide the personal, financial and social habits for rating.
00:30
The goal of this system is to create a negative list of consumers. By doing this, banks can identify individuals as “credit risks.”
00:40
The government hopes that it will promote honesty and punish people who default on their loans. The government wants to help underfunded people and small businesses.
00:52
Critics of this plan call it a breach of privacy. Individuals may be rated, for example, based on whether they buy diapers or alcohol. Since banks will be allowed to know what consumers buy on a daily basis, and how they make decisions, it could lead to discrimination when making decisions about bank loans.
1:16
This extreme level of surveillance makes many people feel uncomfortable about this system.
