1. go ahead (ph.) 進行、開始做
“Can I ask a rather impolite question?” “Sure, go ahead.”
「我可以問一個比較不禮貌的問題嗎?」「好啊,問吧。」
the go-ahead (n.) 批准
We’ve just got the go-ahead from the committee.
我們剛收到委員會的批准了。

2. work out (ph.)發展
How’s the project working out?
專案進行的還好嗎?
workout (n.) 鍛煉
I don’t feel sore after my workout.
我鍛煉完不會感到酸痛。

3. break down (ph.) 故障、停止
His van broke down on the highway.
他的車在高速公路故障了。
breakdown (n.) 細目、分類、故障
We asked for a breakdown of the accident figures into day time and night time.
我們要白天和夜晚事故統計數字的細目表。

4. make up (ph.) 編造、重新來過、創作
He is always making up stories. 他總在編造故事(說謊話)。
We are asked to make up the assignment.我們被要求要重做作業。
makeup (n.) 化妝(品)
She felt insecure without makeup.
她素顏會感到很沒安全感。

5. back up (ph.) 備份、倒車
當動詞重音在up
I want to back up the files on my phone.
我想備份手機裡面的檔案。
I backed up my car.
我倒了車。
backup (n.) 備用物、支援
當名詞重音在最前面
To solve this issue, we are going to need some professional backup.
解決這個問題,我們需要專業的支援。

6. turn out (ph.) 事實證明、結果是
It turns out that we’d know one another several years ago. 結果發現,我們好多年前就已經認識彼此。
turnout (n.) 報名(到場、投票)人數
The turnout of the workshop was quite low.
那場工作坊的報名人數很少。

7. mix up (ph.) 把某人/事搞糊塗
I mixed up the instructions Dave gave me and I am lost now.

Dave給我的指引讓我搞糊塗了,於是我現在迷路了。
mix-up (n.) (混亂引起的)錯誤
There was a mix-up and I didn’t receive the document.
這有點混亂,而且我沒有收到那個文件。

8. break out (ph.) 爆發(戰爭、疾病)
She broke out in a rash after eating that strange fruit.
她吃了奇怪的水果之後,身上開始出現紅疹。

outbreak(n.) 爆發
爆發的名詞是outbreak,另一個很像的名詞是breakout越獄。
The outbreak of African swine fever has seriously affected the world’s pork industry.

非洲豬瘟的爆發已嚴重影響世界的養豬產業。

9. take off (ph.) 起飛
An airplane is taking off.
一架飛機正在起飛。
take-off (n.) 起飛

I often get nervous during take-off.
飛機起飛的時候我通常會感到緊張。

10. come back (ph.) 回來、重新流行
I hope blazers will come back in style.
我希望西裝外套可以快點流行回來
comeback (n.) 東山再起、復出
I wonder which styles will make a comeback next year.
我想知道明年哪個風格會東山再起。

11. walk out (ph.) 罷工
The pilots are planning to walk out in protest. 機師正計劃要罷工抗議。
walkout (n.)罷工
The walkout is scheduled to take place after Lunar New Year. 罷工預定在農曆新年之後。

12. cover up (ph.) 掩飾
The management covered up the crucial evidence.
管理階層掩蓋了關鍵證據。
cover-up (n.) 掩飾
His reaction was a cover-up for insecurity. 
他的反應是缺乏安全感的掩飾。
