語言反映文化，東西方文化有些是互通的，英文其實有很多慣用語和我們日常生活中的俗語相似，甚至就像直譯一樣；來看看以下中文思維也能通的英文慣用語。
1. 患了大頭症 get big-headed
形容人自大、傲慢也可以這樣說:a big head、get big-headed、have a swollen head。
例句：All of us think that Audrey gets big-headed. 我們都認為Audrey患了大頭症。
2. 出賣某人 sell (someone) out
中文的「出賣、背叛某人」，英文說法也很相似，就是 sell (someone) out。告密、打小報告還可以說snitch on someone。
例句：Why did you sell me out? 你為什麼出賣我?
3. 潑冷水 pour cold water on someone
表達「掃興」，中英文講法相同，都是向某人潑冷水， 動詞可以用pour或throw。還可以說throw a wet blanket over someone。
例句：I don’t like people pouring cold water on me when I’m having a good time. 我不喜歡別人在我興致正高時潑冷水。
4. 好久不見 long time no see
有些中式英文被大家說久了，最後就納入詞典變成真的英文，Long time no see就是最有名的例子。
例句：Long time no see! How have you been? 好久不見!你還好嗎?
5. 大嘴巴 a big mouth
中英文都用「大嘴巴」形容人守不住祕密、總是說溜嘴。
例句：Colin has a big mouth; he can’t be trusted with secrets. Colin是個大嘴巴，無法保守祕密。
6. 皮包骨 skin and bones
形容人過瘦，中文我們會說「瘦到皮包骨」。英文的說法很相似:skin and bones(皮膚和骨頭)，你也可以說a bag of bones (瘦得像一袋骨頭)。
例句：The missing boy was just skin and bones when they found him. 當他們發現那個失蹤的男孩時，他瘦成了皮包骨。
7. 上了黑名單 on one’s blacklist
黑名單直譯成英文blacklist就對了，中英文對於這個名詞定義一致。在社群媒體上封鎖其他人則是動詞block。
例句：Lisa told lies frequently. That’s why she was on our blacklist. Lisa常說謊，因此我們把她列入黑名單。
8. 丟臉 lose face
「丟臉」的英文就是lose face。要注意的是，lose和face之間不可以放任何其他的字，就算是兩人以上，face也不用加s。
例句：Bill lost face in front of the clients because he couldn’t answer their questions very well. Bill在客戶面前丟臉了，因為他無法妥善回答他們的問題。
9. 拋媚眼 give someone the (glad) eye
「拋媚眼」相對應的英文慣用語則是give someone the (glad) eye、bat one’s eyelashes at someone或make eyes at someone。雙方眉來眼去可以說exchange glances。
例句： The girl across the street is giving me the glad eye 對街的女孩一直對我拋媚眼。
10. 擋某人的路 stand in one’s way
指妨礙別人做他想做的事中文俚語是「擋某人的路」， 英文即是stand in one’s way。注意，in one’s way是「妨 礙、阻撓」，on one’s way則是「前往...的途中」。
例句： You can do whatever you want. I won’t stand in your way. 你想做什麼都可以，我不會擋你的路。
11. 追隨某人的腳步 follow in someone’s footsteps
follow in someone’s footsteps就是「追隨某人的腳步」。
例句：Joe followed in his father’s footsteps and started his own business. Joe跟隨他父親的腳步創業。
12. 左右手 right hand
中文用「左右手」比喻某人是得力助手，英文只說right hand。
例句：Harry is my right hand. I can’t finish this record without him. Harry是我的左右手，沒有他，我就無法完成這張專輯。
13. 臉紅脖子粗 get hot under the collar
形容人生氣，中文有個俚語是「臉紅脖子粗」，英文則是說collar(領子)底下變熱。
例句：When I suggested Jasmine was mistaken, she got rather hot under the collar. 當我暗示是Jasmine自己搞錯的時候，她發火了。
14. 助人一臂之力 give someone a hand
英文裡表示「助人一臂之力」的片語是give someone a hand，給某人一隻手，和中文說法很相近。
例句：Could you give me a hand with these boxes? 你能幫我搬這些箱子嗎?
15. 宣洩怒氣 let off steam
生氣時的「怒氣」，英語用steam(蒸氣)表達，兩者都有頭頂冒煙的畫面感。Steam正是英文口語中的「氣力、精力」，另一個片語get up steam是「打起精神」。
例句：Such grassroots lawsuits allowed farmers to let off steam. 這種來自基層的申訴讓農民得以宣洩火氣。
16. 過頭 over the top
做得太極端、過頭了，很相似於英文的over the top，這個片語有時候會在網路上看到縮寫成OTT。
例句：What you said was a bit over the top. 你說的話有點太過頭了。
17. 到處問 ask around
ask around表示到處打探消息、打聽情報，與中文說法一致。
例句：If you want to work here, I can ask around about a job for you. 如果你想在這裡工作，我可以幫你打聽有沒有職缺。
18. 把握機會 catch the opportunity
把握機會除了catch the opportunity外，還可以說jump at the chance/opportunity，動詞用jump、leap，兩者都是 「跳、躍」。至於「機會」何時用chance、何時用 opportunity，則是視機會的性質而定，如果機會來得僥 倖，是偶然得到的，請用chance;如果對這個機會含有 期待、盼望的情緒，則用opportunity。
例句：I should catch the chance to make money. 我應該逮住這個賺錢的機會。
19. 長話短說 long story short
「長話短說」是long story short，另一個相似的用法也可以一起記，「說來話長」英文是it’s a long story。
例句：Long story short, I quit my job. 長話短說吧!我辭職了。
20. 火上加油 add fuel to the fire
使原本就不妙的情況更糟，中英文都用「火上加油」形容。
例句：Chloe was angry already. Ben added fuel to the fire by laughing hard while talking on the phone. Chloe已經夠生氣了，Ben還火上加油，講電話有說有笑。
21. 暴風雨前的寧靜 the calm before the storm
壞事發生前的風平浪靜，中英文都用「暴風雨前的寧靜」形容。
Carol may seem happy now, but this is only the calm before the storm. Carol現在看起來好好的，但這不過是暴風雨前的寧靜罷了。
22. 遲到總比不到好 better late than never
這句用法常拿來嘲諷某人遲到很久，最後終於現身。
例句：Summer: Sorry that I’m late.
Tom: No worries! Better late than never.
Summer:對不起我遲到了。 Tom:沒關係!遲到總比沒來好。
23. 時光飛逝 time flies
時間飛逝這個譬喻英文也通用，就是time flies。Time flies還可以延伸time flies when you’re having fun(歡樂的時間總是過得特別快)。
例句：How time flies! It’s been 20 years since we first met. 時間飛逝!我們已經認識20年了。
24. 屏息以待 wait with bated breath
「屏息以待」英文也是用wait with bated breath或是hold one’s breath來表達，bated是形容詞，意思是「減去的、 除去的」。如果前面加了否定詞:don’t hold one’s breath，勸人不要屏息等待，就是告訴別人「別指望了」。
例句：We are waiting with bated breath for Coldplay to sing. 我們屏息等待Coldplay開唱。
25.簡稱 for short
較多音節的英文名字常取某部分簡稱。
例句：Her name’s Caroline, or Carol for short. 她的名字是Caroline，也可以叫她Carol就行了。
