Stephen Hawking

Before you start

Stephen Hawking

WHO

WHAT

HIGHLIGHT

“The downside of my celebrity is that I cannot go anywhere in theworld without being recognized. It is not enough for me to wear dark sunglasses and a wig. The wheelchair gives me away.”

— Stephen said to an Israeli journalist

“My ideal role would be a baddie in a James Bond film. I think the wheelchair and the computer voice would fit the part.”

— Wired

“I deal with tough mathematical questions every day, but please don’t ask me to help with Brexit.”

— with Theresa May, at the 2016 Pride of Britain Awards

HBO《Last Week Tonight with John Oliver》(上週今夜)節目訪談

JO: First off, congratulations on being the first subject of our "Great Minds" series. Be honest, is this the single greatest honor you have ever received?
SH: Yes.
JO: Good. It's a little hard to read your tone of voice. When you say that, are you being sarcastic?
SH: Yes.
JO: I thought so.
(SH Smiled)
JO: If there is one thing you want people to understand about your work, bearing in mind that most people will never understand anything of your work, what would that thing be?
SH: Imaginary time. People think it's something you have in dreams, or when you're up against deadline. But it's a well defined concept.  Imaginary time is like another direction in space. It's the one bit of my work science fiction writers haven't used. Because they don't understand it.

JO: Let's talk about artificial intelligence. In a recent op-ed column you said, and I quote, "Success in creating artificial intelligence would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last." Are you saying that robots are going to destroy humanity? And is that a scientific argument or the pitch from an amazing movie?
SH: Artificial intelligence could be a real danger in the not-to-distant future. It could design improvement for itself and out-smart us all.
JO: I know you're trying to get people to be cautious there, but why should I not be excited about fighting a robot?
SH: You would lose.
JO: Well. Okay. We don't know that, do we? We don't know that for sure, 'cause what could a robot do that I couldn't then fight back with simply just unplugging him, right?
SH: There's a story that scientists built an intelligent computer. The first question they asked it was "Is there a God?". The computer replied, "There is now," and a bolt lightning struck the plug, so it could't be turned off.
JO: Holy shit, that's the most terrifying story I've ever heard.
SH: Yes.

JO: Hold on, who is talking to me right now? Is it you or the sentient computer pretending to talk on your behalf?
SH: It's me
JO: Yeah, but how do I know that, professor? Because if a computer had become sentient what better way to convince people that they hadn't then by co-opting the voice of the most intelligent man on the planet?
SH: You're an idiot.
JO: Yeah, but who's saying that, Stephen? You or the machine?
SH: Both of us.
JO: Okay, alright. That's actually quite reassuring.
JO: You've said that you believed that there could be an infinite number of parallel universes. Does that mean that there is a universe out there that I am smarter than you?
SH: Yes, and also a universe where you're funny.

“ The Simpsons appearances were great fun. But I don’t take them too seriously. I think The Simpsons have treated my disability responsibly.”

— in a 2005 Guardian interview
