冷笑話是一種境界高深的幽默，看似沒有笑點，卻能讓人噗哧笑出來，冷笑話的英文是anti-humor，英語系國家（尤其是北美）流行一種經典的冷笑話叫 chicken cross the road joke，由一問一答組成，笑話的原型是這樣的：

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To get to the other side.

這類笑話藉著提問勾起好奇，以為接下來會出現爆笑的「梗」，沒想到迎來卻是平凡無奇的事實陳述。

由於他的普及度和簡易架構，雞過馬路被二度創作出多種的版本，Why did the chicken cross the road? 中的主詞chicken、動作cross the road可以被替換 成其他事物和動詞：
