飛機停飛說 Stop flying，把客戶嚇了一大跳！

1. Stop flying是什麼?
Stop後面加一個動詞，意思是「原來在做這件事，現在不做了。」如果你請某人“Stop whining.”意思是「別在抱怨」。

飛機「停飛」用stop flying，會讓人會錯意，以為飛機本來在飛，現在不飛了，像是引擎突然「失去動力，無法飛行」。

The plane stops flying and starts falling when the power is completely cut.
飛機突然停飛，接著在引擎完全失靈之際就開始下墜。

例一：Stop flying也可當「禁止飛行」
Stop加上一個動詞，除了有「停止做正在做的事」，還可以延伸到「禁止、戒掉」某件事，像Stop smoking 是戒菸。所以禁飛、停飛，以後不能再飛，也叫做Stop flying。與暫時性的飛機停飛不同。

例二：停止搭飛機
Stop flying還有一個意思，是指「停止搭飛機」。
We generally recommend pregnant women stop flying after 34 weeks.
我們一般建議婦女懷孕34周後，不要搭飛機。

2. Be canceled & grounded才是「停飛」
我們一般指的飛機「停飛」，可能是航班取消，可以用cancel。
If your flight is canceled, the airline typically rebooks you on the next available departure.
如果航班取消，航空公司一般會幫你安排下一班飛機。

如果是因故停飛，常用的還有be grounded這個字，因為飛機停在地面上(ground)。
The Boeing 737 MAX has had two deadly crashes in three months. Now the President has weighed in and the plane was grounded.
波音737 MAX在2個月內就發生兩起致命墜機，現在總統已經介入，飛機已停飛。

3. grounded美式懲罰
美國人在管教孩子最常見的方式叫做「禁足」，限制他們出去玩的自由，禁足，就是用ground這個字，至於另一種懲罰是「留校察看」detention，放學後多留1-2小時，留在學校做作業。

You are grounded.
你被禁足了。
I’m grounded for the next two weeks since I stayed out until 4 am last night.
我被禁足2周，因為我昨天晚上在外逗留到凌晨4點。

4. stay grounded 務實、接地氣
grounded本身當形容詞，做明智、理智的，Stay grounded可以用來形容一個成名的人，還是會自己丟垃圾或者和老朋友碰面吃飯，依舊很務實、接地氣。

He's trying to stay grounded in spite of all the fame and praise.
儘管得到眾多名聲與讚美，他還是很踏實過日子。
