很中文的詞，英文怎麼表達?
大多數的詞中英文都有相對應的講法，有些中英文差異不大，對講中文的學生來說很好理解。不過有些就會讓學生會錯意，像是：口語的handful和手無關，而是指某人難搞。Down to earth不是形容人很土、沒見過世面，恰巧相反，這是讚美人「做人實在」。
1. 難搞 handful
形容難控制的人、動物或是麻煩事，中文我們會說「難 搞」，英文可以說 impossible to deal with，或是更口語， 可以用名詞handful。
例句：This kid is quite a handful. 這孩子相當難搞。
2. 有前途 go places
Go places可不是去很多地方，place除了地方，還可以指 「社會地位、身份」，所以go places就延伸為「有前途、會成功」，常用在對年輕人的期許。也可以用來形 容公司，前景看好的企業。
例句：They said that Oscar was clearly going places. 他們說Oscar未來肯定會成功。
3. 跑腿 run an errand
出門辦事、跑腿，英文是 run an errand，errand 本身是指短距離的拆事、瑣事。
例句：After school, I run some errands for my dad. 下課之後我去幫我爸辦點事。
4. 渣男 fuckboy
fuck是髒話，因此fuckboy想必不是什麼讚美之詞。其實意思就是中文說的「渣男」。
例句：Keep clear of Jeff. He is a fuckboy. 遠離Jeff，他是個渣男。
5. 怪咖 geek
geek原指馬戲團裡的「雜耍演員」，現在多用來指怪氣 卻在某些領域特別熱衷且頗具才華的人，如computer geek(電腦鬼才)、alpha geek(達人)。
例句：Gary is a computer geek. I believe he is able to solve this problem. Gary是個電腦怪咖，我相信他有能力解決這個問題。
6. 低頭族 phubber
中文我們說「低頭族」，英文則是由 phone( 電話 ) 和snubber( 冷落他人的人 ) 組成一個新單字 phubber。
例句：John is a classic phubber. He cares about nothing but his smartphone. John是個典型的低頭族，他什麼都不在意，只在乎他的手機。
7. 電燈泡 third wheel
中文的「電燈泡」，英文不是light bulb，而是third wheel，在兩輪的腳踏車上硬要再加上第三個輪子，顯得 很多餘。此外，說某人play gooseberry，就是指此人不 識趣地和一對情侶在一起。
例句：You two go to the movies without me. I don’t want to be a third wheel. 你們倆自己去看電影，我不想當電燈泡。
8. ⋯迷 ...addict
對某事極為愛好的人，中文會說「XX迷」，「迷」這個 字英文應該用addict，表示「上癮的人」，或是用junkie 來代換。「對...入迷」也可以說be a sucker for ...。
例句：They are rock music addicts. 他們是搖滾樂迷。
9. 霸王餐 dine and dash
「霸王餐」的英文是 dine and dash，本身可以當名詞也 可以當動詞，中間加了連字號後，dine-and-dash 還可以 作形容詞。同義詞另有:dine and ditch、dine and run、 mash and dash、chew and screw、lick and split、eat and fleet、run the check。
例句：The young man who dined and dashed at the restaurant is my neighbor. 曾在這家餐廳吃霸王餐的年輕人是我的鄰居。
10. 一線之隔 a fine line
比喻兩個事物看似相像但意義卻天差地別的情況，中文說一線之隔，英文是a fine line。
例句：There is a fine line between guilt and shame. 心虛跟羞愧差異不大，可是落差很大。
11. 做人很實在 down to earth
中文說「做人很實在」，英文則是down to earth，是形容人很好的讚美，除了務實、謙遜，也很常拿來形容不擺架子、好相處的人。
例句：Tom Hanks was so warm and very down to earth. Tom Hanks很熱情而且超好相處。
12. 閉門羹 brush off
brush off除了字面意思的「刷掉」外，還可以表示「不理睬、拒之門外」，加了連字號等同俗語的「閉門羹」。常見片語有get the brush-off(吃到閉門羹)、 give someone the brush-off(給某人吃閉門羹)，也可以說slam/shut the door in someone’s face。
例句：Sam went up to that girl and asked her to dance, but he got the brush-off. Sam上前請那個女孩跳舞，但吃到了閉門羹。
13. 黃色笑話 blue joke
黃色笑話不是yellow joke，yellow在英文裡並沒有色情的意思，blue才有「猥褻」的意涵，因此黃色笑話是blue joke，也可以說dirty joke或off-color joke。搭配的動詞有 tell、make和crack。
例句：Steve often tells blue jokes in the office. Steve常常在辦公室裡講黃色笑話。
14. 說錯話 put one’s foot in one’s mouth
日常口語的「說錯話、失言」，相對應的英文慣用語是 put one’s foot in one’s mouth。foot是「腳」的意思，字面解釋，把腳塞進自己的嘴裡，當然是個很糗的舉動， 用以引申為言語失當。
例句：I shouldn’t have said that she became fat. I really put my foot in my mouth. 我不該說她變胖了，我真是說錯了話。
15. 炒魷魚 get the sack
中文用「炒魷魚」的譬喻來表達「辭退、解僱、開 除」。英文裡則是說get the sack、get the boot和get one’s walking papers，sack是麻布袋，boot是靴子， walking papers則是解僱通知單。
例句：Mike got the sack for stealing the company’s money. Mike因為盜用公款被炒魷魚。
16. 脫身 off the hook
hook是魚鉤，off在此解釋為「從...脫落、掉下」，一條魚被鉤子釣起來後卻能掙脫，意思延伸為「脫身、擺脫 責任」的意思，類似片語還有get rid of，後面接擺脫掉 的人或事物。
例句：The police let him off the hook with a warning this time. 這一次警察放過他，只是警告他。
17. 色情片 porn
中文我們講A片，其實「色情片」的英文和a沒有關係， 而是pornography，口語俗稱porn。另外，社群媒體上很常看到美食貼文會用#food porn這個hashtag，意即「美食情色」，讓人口水直流的意思。
例句：I know what type of porn Jason would like. 我知道Jason喜歡哪種A片。
18. 看著辦 play it by ear
play it by ear不是「憑耳朵演奏」的意思，它指的是會演奏某種樂器卻不會看五線譜的人，要彈奏時就只能憑上一次聽到的記憶來彈。現今已引申為「隨機應變、見機 行事」。相近慣用語為:keep one’s wits about one。
例句：I haven’t had a chance to prepare the presentation. So I’ll just play it by ear! 我沒有機會為簡報作準備，所以就隨機應變吧!
19. 少來了 no way
中文表達驚訝、不可置信的語氣會說「少來了、別騙 了、真的假的」，英文也有好幾種說法可以表示驚訝: no way、get out of here、you’re kidding me。
例句：You will treat us to dinner? No way! 你會請我們吃晚餐?少來了!
20. 睜一隻眼閉一隻眼 wink at something
wink是「眨眼、使眼色」的意思，也有「假裝不見、故意忽視」之意。
例句：They took bribes, but the authorities winked at it. 他們集體收賄，但主管機關卻睜隻眼閉隻眼。
21. 教訓某人一頓 give sb. a piece of one’s mind
give sb. a piece of one’s mind直譯是「讓你知道我的一些 想法」，但並不是真的要給人意見或忠告，而是準備要 大發雷霆、開罵了。
例句：I'm fed up with Michael’s bad attitude at work. I’ll give him a piece of my mind. 我受夠了Michael糟糕的工作態度，我準備好好教訓他一頓。
22. 趁某人措手不及 catch someone off-balance
off-balance字面上看起來是「失去平衡」，引申為「難以招架」，如果與動詞catch連用，表示「趁某人措手不及」。
例句：That guy caught me off-balance and punched me in the face. 那傢伙趁我措手不及時揍我臉。
23. 早該做某事了 high time
high time意思是某事已經延宕，不能再拖下去，早該著手了。
例句：You’ve been planning for years. It is high time you started. 你已經計劃那麼多年了，該動身了。
24. 扯後腿 pull the rug out from under someone
rug是「地毯」，有人猛不防扯掉你腳下的地毯， pull the rug out from under someone就用來表示阻撓某人的 行動，令其不能達到目的，亦即俗語「扯後腿、拆後 台」。此語也可以寫成pull the rug under one’s feet。
例句：Kelly wouldn’t have lost the game if her friends hadn’t pulled the rug out from under her. 如果沒有朋友扯她後腿，Kelly不會輸掉比賽。
25. 鑽牛角尖 split hairs
split hairs字面上意思是把頭髮一根根分開，引申為枝微末節處做過度分析，也就是俗話說的「鑽牛角尖」。hair必須用複數形hairs，以表現出分開「數根頭髮」的那種無意義、不必要感。另外也可以用be hung up on sth這個句型，意指「過度關心某事」。只想用一個單字來表 達，可以用stubborn(固執的)、paranoid(偏執的)、 obsessive(過分關心的)。
例句：Don’t split hairs! There is no difference between “Inappropriate” and “Improper”. 別鑽牛角尖!「不妥」與「不當」沒什麼不同。
