自信的人不能說Confidence man

Peter想要轉職，但還只是想而未決定，不料辦公室同事都知道了，這事怎麼會外傳呢，Peter說：I told Jane in confidence.

看到confidence這個字，很多直覺反應是「自信、信心」，你信心滿滿地告訴Jane，也難怪她會幫你傳話。其實，這裡的confidence不是自信，而是秘密、心事。

I told Jane in confidence.
（X）我充滿自信地告訴Jane。
（O）我私底下告訴Jane。

In confidence指「秘密地、私下地」，in strict confidence則是「不惜一切地守著秘密」。注意介系詞in，用with，with confidence就變成「滿懷信心地」。

Confidence當自信時不可數，當成秘密時可數，可以加s，例：

• I listened to her confidences for an hour.　（我聽她講了一個小時的心事。）
• Last night, we talked endlessly, exchanging confidences.（昨晚，我們聊個沒完，互吐心事。）

「秘密」和「自信」意思相隔很遠，為什麼都可以用confidence？Confidence這個名詞源自於兩個形容詞：

• Confident =>有自信的
• Confidential =>機密的

因此衍生成名詞之後，它既可以是自信，也可以是秘密。一旦自信過了頭，就變成狂妄、欺騙，所以說一個人是Confidence man，就是指他是「騙子」。Confidence game也不是什麼信心的遊戲，而是「騙局」。

Confidence man更常以簡寫con man出現，也可以直接用con代替confidence。
l It's a con - you get half the food for twice the price! 這是個圈套，你花兩倍的錢才買到一半的食物！

 現在來複習一下confidence的三種意思：

 1. 我們信任這位新市長。

(X) We have confidences in the new mayor.
(O) We have confidence in the new mayor.

confidence作「信賴、信任」解時，是不可數名詞，字尾不可加s。have confidence in是一個常見片語，表示「對…有信心」。也可改用動詞confide：We confide in the new mayor.

2. 擁有自信，你還沒開始就已經獲勝了。
(X) In confidence, you have won even before you have started.
(O) With confidence, you have won even before you have started.

in confidence是「秘密地、私下地」，with confidence才是「有信心地」。

3. 我告訴面試官，我是個有自信的人。
(X) I told the interviewer that I am a confidence man.
(O) I told the interviewer that I am a confident man.

confidence man是「騙子、詐欺者」，本句是要說「有自信的人」，用形容詞confident。
